There are various leadership styles, so it is hard to say that there is a right or wrong way to lead a team. There are, however, a number of common leadership mistakes that are made that become valuable learning tools. Learning how to handle situations and interact with your employees to avoid these mistakes is the common base for executive leadership training.Non-effective leadership can often be seen in leaders who:
- Don’t listen.
Understanding the requests and needs of your team members is crucial to leadership. Styles of working are different for every member, so it’s important to read everyone. - Do not stick to strategy.
If you change your mind often or get off of the set plan, your team will not be effective. Leadership requires dedication to the strategy so everyone stays on task. - Are seen as friends.
When you bring yourself down to the same level as your employees, you are more likely to be seen as a peer instead of a superior. Effective leadership can only happen if you are seen as a level of authority. - Are hypocritical.
Working by example is the only way to establish your status and demonstrate true leadership. Mistakes made by you will trickle down and become mistakes made by everyone. - Show their emotions.
If you’re having a bad day, keep it at the door. Some leadership styles have employees and leaders sharing feelings and getting personal, but there is a line that needs to be drawn. Constantly complaining to your team members will show you as vulnerable.
